The Urban League of Greater Cleveland is a non-profit social service organization, connected to the National Urban League as one of 97 affiliates in 36 states.  As a funded community partner of United Way of Greater Cleveland, the League seeks to improve the economic, cultural, social and educational conditions affecting all citizens of Cuyahoga County.

The Mission:

To enable African Americans and other minority members to develop and exercise their potential on par with all other Americans through education, research, advocacy and provision of services.  Today the Urban League’s work is focused in the following areas:  Education & Youth; Economic Empowerment; Health & Quality of Life; Civic Engagement; and Civil Rights & Racial Justice.  The Urban League of Greater Cleveland focuses its programs, projects and initiatives on creating opportunities for minorities to gain empowerment through education, successful comprehensive career exploration, personal leadership development and entrepreneurial training.

Since its founding in 1917, the Urban League of Greater Cleveland has been an advocate and champion for those living on the social margins.  It has partnered with many community organizations during its 93 year history. Successful collaboration has become a part of the organization’s DNA.  Job training, job placement, Education & Youth Development, and Small Business Development are among the flagship programs that have helped thousands of Greater Clevelanders to make positive steps in improving their lives.  You may know the Urban League for its annual Historically Black College Tours conducted each Spring.  You may know the Urban League for getting your first job or that first job of someone you know.  Your Urban League experience could be from the Fatherhood Initiative, Computer Training, GED or Home Health/Nurse’s Assistant Training.  Perhaps you are a Career Beginnings or Project Ready Alum…Whatever your connection, there is something for everyone at the Urban League.

In addition to its brand equity and organizational capacity, The Urban League of Greater Cleveland is part of a robust network of other Urban League affiliates across the State of Ohio.  The Ohio Council of Urban Leagues (OCUL) is a 9-member group of affiliates organized for collaborative action on key issues affecting the Leagues’ consumers throughout the state
